Heatwaves Project Seeking Participants

May 20 2016

'Reducing Social Vulnerability for Extreme-Heat Events in Older Adults' research project is looking for participants. Please share the information about the current survey in your network and help us recruit 300 participants who are 60 years of age or older. The study involves completing a brief questionnaire either online, in person, or over the phone. The questionnaire should take less than 30 minutes to complete. Participants will receive a $10 gift card for Tim Hortons to compensate for time and any participation expenses.

As community partners with the Heatwaves Project, we have advised the research team on the overall methodology including survey questions and approaches to outreach. We referred experienced community researchers who were hired to join the team to conduct pilot interviews and we engaged community members through our contacts to take part in these interviews. We aim to use what is learned through this project in conjunction with our Decent Lives and Strong Neighbourhoods work.

Call for Participation - Reducing Social Vulnerability for Extreme-Heat Events in Older Adult

We are a team of researchers from Wilfrid Laurier University working with community organizations, emergency planners, and interested seniors to explore how seniors perceive changes in our climate and the risks associated with heat waves in Waterloo Region. We are seeking people aged 60 or older to participate in in a survey about perceptions of risk related to heat waves, the factors that affect these risk perceptions, and ways of staying comfortable and healthy during heat waves.

What are the goals of the study?

These interviews are part of a study of older adults' perceptions of the risks of heat waves. We hope the information gathered through this study can help to find better ways of increasing awareness of the risks of heat waves, and improve the resources available for coping with heat and other extreme weather in Waterloo Region.

You are eligible to participate if you:

• Are aged 60 or older

• Live in Waterloo Region

What is involved in the study?

The study involves completing a brief questionnaire either online, in person, or over the phone. The questionnaire should take less than 30 minutes to complete.

All reasonable measures will be taken to ensure that your personal information is kept confidential.
