Waterloo Region launch of ISARC 2010 Social Audit Report

Poverty-Free Waterloo Region is a coalition of local organizations working to eradicate poverty. Waterloo Region was one of dozens of communities across Ontario that took part in the 2010 Social Audit report which focused on whether life was better for those living in poverty than in 2005 when the first social audit took place. Sixteen Waterloo Region groups contributed input to the social audit.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Friday December 3rd is the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the theme for 2010 is progress has been made on achieving integration of persons with disabilities into the Millennium Goals. A mini-rally (PDF) will be hosted by the Disabilities and Human Rights Group at 12:00 noon at Speakers Corner at King and Frederick St. in downtown Kitchener.

A Recovery-Free Zone: The Unyielding Impact of the Economic Downturn on Nonprofit Community Social Services in Ontario

A Recovery-Free Zone, a survey of 311 non-profit community service agencies across Ontario, released today by the Social Planning Network of Ontario follows up one year later on a similar survey conducted in 2009. It shows that service demand continues to rise with 68% of respondents seeing a greater demand in April 2010 than prior to September 2008. Almost 80% of respondents attribute this increase in demand as primarily or in part due to economic conditions.

Social Assistance Review Advisory Council Report

The report released today by the Provincial Social Assistance Review Committee does not help deal with people's urgent needs today! Further review and consultation will be helpful for longer term solutions. The Social Planning Network of Ontario and various partners across the Province working on Putting Food in the Budget want a serious response to the urgent needs experienced by many in our local community.
